What do leaders in your organization need to understand about safety in order to be effective? The seven insights presented in this session are based on decades of research, experience, and innovation. They will help leaders understand why good intentions are only the start for a safer workplace, how to sidestep common misinterpretations that can derail safety efforts, and the importance of leaders at every level being engaged with safety – starting with the most serious events first.

Speaker David Libby, Partner, Krause Bell Group

David Libby has been helping U.S. and multi-national organizations improve safety and operational performance for over 30 years. He brings a hands on, practical approach to improving safety leadership, culture, and performance. For the last 14 years, David’s work as an external consultant helped dozens of clients improve their safety leadership, workplace culture, and operational performance. David led several organizations in the Forest Products and Pulp and Paper industries during a 20-year career. His experience spans Operations and Organizational Development and includes director of Human Resources and Environmental Health and Safety. Sought-after as a leadership coach and trusted advisor, David works with all levels of managers from front-line supervisors to CEOs. He understands organizational change comes from a 360-degree examination of strengths and weaknesses and uses that data to develop strategies for safety and operational improvement through effective practice and feedback. David is a well-regarded speaker and workshop leader, whether engaging an audience of 1,000 in driving culture change or coaching a small team of executives in a 2-day safety culture workshop. An experienced leader in organizational change in industries both with and without labor unions, David understands what it takes to gain real employee buy-in and support for improved organizational safety. He testified before a U.S. Congressional sub-committee in 1996 on best practices in Union/Management partnerships. David’s varied experience includes work in Healthcare, Mining, Food & Beverage, Chemical, Utilities and Transportation, from front-line employees to the Chief Executive Officers. David holds a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management from the University of Maine and earned his Human Resources certification from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the Society of Human Resources Management and was a Shingo Prize (a Manufacturing Excellence Award) examiner for many years.
