Environmental Health & Safety Responsibilities
To establish and maintain policies, practices and procedures that ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations. To support programs which promote a safe and healthy work environment at all assigned Tribune Publishing California Times facilities. To develop, implement, and track the progress of, programs for the control and reduction of environmental liability, personal injury, and property damage. Maintains compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations affecting environmental health and safety activities for California Times facilities and operations. To represent California Times facilities before governmental agencies in environmental compliance matters. To develop and support existing safety initiatives, including in-plant safety committees. To oversee the preparation and timely submittal of all reports associated with environmental permits. To maintain the company registry of all environmental permits, records and files. To conduct periodic audits to identify potential workplace hazards, program deficiencies and liabilities. To present control and corrective action recommendations to company management. To conduct appropriate training programs to comply with OSHA regulations and promote safety awareness. To conduct or coordinate the investigation of serious accidents and near-miss incidents. To review and analyze accident data to identify trends or areas requiring additional focus. To recommend, develop and implement environmental, health and safety policies, programs and procedures to eliminate the occurrence environmental incidents, and the occurrence of personal injuries, property damage, and vehicular/general liability claims.
Workers Compensation Responsibilities
To monitor workers’ compensation claims reporting forms, procedures and activities. Conducts workers’ compensation claims investigations and has an active role in directing third-party claims investigation activities.
To communicate with employees and supervisors/managers as appropriate regarding information needed to process claims (e.g. medical documentation, injury & incident reports, employee employment history, return to work information, etc.).
Ensure that managers are aware of an employee’s work-related restrictions and makes certain that they are complying with all instructions provided.
To make informed decisions regarding the acceptance or denial of a claim.
Communicate with attorneys, doctors, and other relevant parties as necessary regarding claim matters.
Coordinate depositions, mediations, hearings on behalf of the company and provide feedback on the claims status.

- Bachelor’s degree preferred (safety, environmental or natural sciences)
- Safety certification preferred: ASP, CSP, OHST, CHST
- At least three years of experience in environmental health or safety compliance.

- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Command of the fundamentals of journalism: Fairness, accuracy, accessibility
Driving license and maintenance of appropriate insurance (e.g. full coverage) required.
